‘Jack Black is riding high with the bulk of the belly laughs in this cracker’: Alex Zane on Kung Fu Panda 3

THE third instalment of this stonkingly successful series is fantastic fun, featuring some truly dazzling animation.

Jack Black is the comeback king right now, after a quiet couple of years — and the misfires of The Big Year and The D Train — he’s riding high.

First, there was the success of Goosebumps and now this cracker, in which he returns to voice loveable hero Po, who is the last panda alive . . . or so he thought.

This threequel sees Po reunited with his long lost dad Li Shan (Bryan Cranston) and, together with the help of the Furious Five — Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Crane (David Cross), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu) and Monkey (Jackie Chan) — he must defeat a new enemy from the spirit world, Kai (JK Simmons).

Kung Fu Panda 2 was a spectacular sequel and while this third movie never quite manages to scale the heights of its predecessor, it’s still hugely entertaining.

Let’s get the problems out of the way first. Simmons’ villain isn’t a patch on Gary Oldman’s peacock Lord Shen from the last movie and the story doesn’t pack nearly the same emotional punch.

Those issues aside this has plenty to offer, not least some jaw-dropping action as Po enters the Spirit Realm, which gives the DreamWorks animators license to come up with some stunning visuals.

Of the new additions to the cast Kate Hudson, as flirty panda Mei Mei who takes an instant shine to Po, is by far the funniest but the bulk of the belly laughs still belong to Black.

His voicing of Po has created a massively likeable hero to build these movies around and much of the pleasure of these pictures comes from his performance. Kung Fu Panda 3 makes sure to continue the tradition of being perfectly pleasant for parents to sit through after being dragged to the multiplex by their kids.

With the number of quality animations emerging from Hollywood now, competition is tougher than when the first film hit cinemas. But, having high-kicked its way to a massive box-office haul in the US, it looks like Po is one panda that’s certainly not on the endangered list.
